Support the reappointment of Judge Karen M.C. Cortes

Support the reappointment of Judge Karen M.C. Cortes
The Issue
As a parent and community leader deeply embedded in the fabric of our educational community, I am writing with a sense of urgency and profound concern. The potential non-reappointment of Judge Karen M.C. Cortes has struck a chord within me, not only as someone who is invested in the welfare and future of our children, but also as a witness to the invaluable contributions she has made to our community.
Judge Cortes is not just a name in the judiciary and dedicated public servant. Her role transcends the bench as she actively participates in the intricacies of school life, from her position as a parent, volunteer, to her engagement in our community. Her deep commitment is evidenced in countless instances where she has prioritized the needs and interests of our students and their families. She shows up, listens carefully, and leads with integrity, compassion, and accountability.
We, the undersigned parents and caregivers of The Mott Hall School community, write to express our strong and urgent support for the reappointment of Judge Karen M.C. Cortes.
Through her professional experience, Judge Cortes brings critical insight into the realities faced by children and families navigating complex systems, including the child welfare system. Her work reflects an understanding that judicial decisions have lasting, real-world consequences and that justice must be applied with both fairness and humanity. Judges with this depth of experience and perspective are essential to protecting children, supporting families, and upholding public trust in the courts.
As a woman of color, and the first Filipino American appointed to the New York City Family Court, Judge Cortes also serves as a powerful and meaningful role model for our students and families. Her presence on the bench matters deeply to communities who are too often underrepresented in positions of authority. She exemplifies leadership, service, and excellence in a way that resonates far beyond the courtroom.
Our community was deeply concerned to learn that Judge Cortes may not be reappointed. We believe that losing her voice, experience, and dedication would be a significant loss, not only to our school community, but to the many families impacted by her work in the judiciary.
We respectfully urge New York City Mayor Mamdani to reconsider and to reappoint Judge Karen M.C. Cortes, giving full weight to her qualifications, her service, and the strong community support behind her continued work on the bench.
Tuesday, January 27th is the last day of Judge Cortes' term, this matter is urgent. Please reappoint Judge Cortes TODAY!
