City Responds to Public Outcry—Here’s What’s Next

Dear supporters,
I want to personally thank each and every one of you—over 14,000 and still going strong—for standing up for the preservation of Key West’s free-roaming chickens. Your voices made a real impact.
Because of the public outcry surrounding the April 4th memo, which proposed a bounty system and acknowledged euthanasia as a possible outcome, the City of Key West has since clarified that there are no current plans to move forward with any such program. While that’s reassuring, it’s important to remember that this conversation only reached the public because we demanded transparency.
Tonight, I spoke at the June 4th City Commission meeting to urge the City to publicly commit to rejecting any future policies that could lead to cruelty or displacement. I also presented a visual outline of a humane, community-based pilot plan that focuses on non-lethal management, public education, and ethical relocation options.
I also called on the City to provide verifiable data to support any claims about ecological impact, sanitation issues, or property damage—issues often cited to justify intervention but rarely backed with evidence.
This movement isn’t over. I will continue to monitor developments and keep you updated here. For those who joined us at the meeting or supported from afar: thank you. You reminded our leaders that Key West is watching—and we care.
