It feels strange writing about anything other than COVID-19 with all that is going on. That said, it is very important when we emerge from this pandemic, that we have a clean, reliable, and affordable grid to depend on. We know that the COVID-19 virus and the steps that government agencies are taking to reduce its spread have resulted in hundreds of thousands of people finding themselves without jobs.

The multi-thousand page Draft Environmental Impact Statement shows that breaching the lower Snake River dams and replacing them with a carbon-free generating portfolio would cost roughly $1 billion per year, and raise the monthly electric bills for millions of Northwest electricity customers by 25%. 

We cannot pretend that a 25% rate increase is something that most people can afford, especially now. There are more responsible ways to help endangered salmon and orcas. 

Please take time this week to either call-in to one of two public teleconferences and share your opinion, or take the opportunity to write in to share what a clean, reliable, and affordable grid means to you and your community.
