The Issue

As residents of Hyde Park, Roslindale, and West Roxbury neighborhoods, we love the sense of community, the neighborhood feel, and the unique local businesses. However, as time passes, the needs of our families and community change. The current zoning laws make it difficult for homeowners to adapt and thrive in place, by making much needed improvements and repairs a time and resource intensive process.

The proposed Neighborhood Housing Zoning Initiative offers a reasonable adjustment to existing laws, enabling necessary improvements to homes, allows the building of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), and increases density in a modest way that fits within the character of the neighborhood. This initiative aims to support families in growing right where they are, fostering community stability, which is vital for family dynamics, community cohesion, and local economic vitality.

The initiative will allow the construction of ADUs, promoting historic housing patterns that once helped families support aging relatives or young adults seeking independence while staying close to home. This aligns harmoniously with preserving our neighborhood's character while enhancing its adaptability for modern life.

Moreover, allowing modest increases in density can have profound economic impacts. Local businesses will thrive with increased foot traffic and more local customers, maintaining their diversity and vibrancy. We envision a strengthened local economy where businesses are helped to flourish, benefiting everyone.

Additionally, as the cost of homes continues to soar, increased zoning flexibility can help mitigate the challenges of affordability, providing young families and future generations the opportunity to live in the community they love, while also making it easier for existing couples and families to remain in their neighborhood.

Our neighborhoods have a chance to lead by example, illustrating how intelligent, community-focused zoning can bolster long-term livability and prosperity. Let's support changes that help families remain in their homes and grow in place, and preserve the essence of our beloved neighborhoods.
