The Issue

On September 12, 2025, my world was turned upside down. We discovered that my son's head coach was a level 3 registered sex offender. Despite countless efforts to reach out to various entities for help, we were shocked to learn that in Washington State, and even on a federal level, it is not illegal for sex offenders to coach youth sports. This loophole in the system puts approximately 1 million children in Washington and 60 million kids nationwide at the risk of encountering sexual predators under the guise of sports coaching.

We need decisive action now more than ever. This is why we are urging for the enactment of the Jake Thomas Act. This Act aims to protect our children by implementing a series of crucial safeguards:

1. **Ban sex offenders from coaching youth sports:** It's imperative to ensure individuals with a history of sexual offenses are not allowed near vulnerable children.

2. **Stringent verification processes:** Mandate ID and social security number to verify identities during background checks, ensuring no loophole for false identities.

3. **Enhanced background checks:** Utilize dual check systems through NCSI and FBI fingerprint background checks to ensure thorough scrutiny of every applicant.

4. **Establish a youth sports coaching registry:** Create a comprehensive registry delineating the credibility and history of youth coaches.

5. **Impose penalties:** Stricter penalties must be in place for coaches and leagues that knowingly or unknowingly allow sex offenders near children.

6. **Reporting hotlines:** Set up dedicated hotlines for parents and children to report any violations or suspicious activities, ensuring swift action and accountability.

We must act now to protect our children. They deserve a safe environment to learn, grow, and enjoy sports without the fear of being preyed upon. By supporting the Jake Thomas Act, we are standing up not just for the safety of children in Washington, but for every child across America. Let’s ensure no parent has to endure the fear and anxiety that I faced, and no child is left vulnerable to predators.

Sign this petition to urge lawmakers to enshrine these necessary protections and safeguard our children's futures.
