Support the Dorchester Bike Park Community Project
The Issue
The Goal:
We are gathering as many signatures as possible to show Dorchester Town Council and Dorset Council that our community overwhelmingly supports transforming the neglected BMX dirt trail at the Castle Park play area into a vibrant, multi-discipline, all-weather wheeled sports facility.
Description:
Dorchester and the wider community have a fantastic opportunity to turn a neglected outdoor asset into a vibrant, safe space for everyone to ride, skate, and stay active.
Right now, our town and the surrounding areas completely lack any modern BMX or mountain bike (MTB) infrastructure. Young people, local families and riders are forced to travel entirely out of the area just to find safe, accessible off-road cycling facilities—with the nearest tarmac pump track requiring an approximate 45-minute drive. Meanwhile, our existing dirt track at Castle Park has fallen into a state of disrepair, leaving it worn out and only suitable for the most basic use.
We want to change that by establishing the Dorchester Bike Park Community Project.
Our vision is to breathe new life into this space. Through a clever reconfiguration of the Castle Park play area, we can transform the current site into a dedicated community bike park. The concept design features three core zones explicitly engineered to help riders build confidence and progress their skills safely. Our proposal includes:
- A 180-Metre Tarmac Pump Track: A highly durable, low-maintenance track built for everyone—from toddlers on balance bikes and children on scooters to skateboarders, BMXers, mountain bikers, and riders using specialised adaptive sports equipment.
- Two 75-Metre Progressive Dirt Jump Lines: Dedicated dirt trails and jumps designed for riders looking to practice and progress their aerial skills safely in a sanctioned environment.
- An Approximately 100-Metre Skills Line: A dedicated training lane featuring rollers, small jumps, drop-ins, and rock features designed to help beginners master bike handling before moving on to more advanced trails..
Why this matters for Dorchester:
Fixing a Broken Asset: Instead of letting a public space go to waste, this project transforms an aged, poorly maintained site into a clean, safe, and welcoming community landmark.
Progressive Learning for All Abilities: By combining a tarmac pump track, skills line, and dirt jumps, absolute beginners can learn safely alongside advanced riders pushing their limits.
Health & Well-being: It provides a free, fun, and highly accessible way for people of all generations to enjoy high-intensity outdoor exercise.
Community Spirit: It creates an inclusive, multi-generational social hub that brings people together and gives local young people a positive, constructive outlet.
