Subject: Request for Support - Design Variance UDC Case 2024-0063 for a 6ft Fence and Gate

Dear Friends;

I am writing to seek your support for our Design Variance UDC Case 2024-0063, which requests permission for a 6-foot fence and gate with a segment of 8 feet to cover an electrical box on our property. This variance is essential due to Snow Berns that reach up to 10ft in the winter  and a critical need for enhanced security and protection within our neighborhood.

Following guidance from the Land and Planning Department, we diligently constructed a fence of the informed  approved height of 8ft. Regrettably, a subsequent visit from code enforcement resulted in misinformation regarding the maximum allowable fence height, leading us to reduce the fence to 6feet.

30 days later came back saying she made a mistake and would have to be 4ft.

Given the unique challenges posed by our location, particularly with snow berms reaching up to 10 feet, a 4-foot fence would prove insufficient in safeguarding our property against natural elements and security risks. The prevalence of criminal activities such as theft, drug trafficking, and prostitution in our neighborhood underscores the urgency for a taller fence to ensure the safety and privacy of our home.
Our application for a variance aims to rectify this oversight and maintain a 6-foot fence and gate, which is more practical and effective in addressing our security concerns. We respectfully request your support in urging the Urban Design Commission to approve our request during the upcoming hearing.
The hearing is scheduled to take place tonight at the Assembly Chambers, Z.J. Loussac Library, 3600 Denali Street, Anchorage, Alaska, on June 12, 2024, at 6:30 P.M. Your backing is crucial in demonstrating community support for this variance.

You can show your support by signing our online petition and/ or sending a brief email to the Planner in charge, Elizabeth Appleby, at elizabeth.appleby@anchorageak.gov, expressing your endorsement of Variance Request 2024-0063.

Your assistance in this matter is sincerely appreciated, and your support will greatly contribute to our efforts to secure the necessary approval for our fence variance.

Thank you for considering our request.
Warm regards,

Alex Marqueda
