The Issue

Every voter deserves stability, fairness, and confidence that the rules of democracy won’t be rewritten midgame. That’s why Rep. Kevin Kiley’s proposed legislation to ban mid-decade redistricting deserves urgent public support — no matter your party.

In the past month, redistricting has turned into a national arms race. Texas Republicans, encouraged by Donald Trump, are forcing through new congressional maps designed to tilt the next election their way. In response, California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom says he may redraw his state’s maps to favor Democrats — and send them to voters in a special election this fall.

This tit-for-tat escalation threatens to destabilize our elections for years to come. If politicians can redraw maps whenever they gain power — not just after the census, but whenever it suits them — then voters lose all trust in the process.

Rep. Kiley is right: This isn’t just bad policy — it’s dangerous. His bill would ban mid-decade redistricting nationwide and nullify any new maps passed before the 2030 census. That means stopping Texas’s map scheme, blocking California’s proposed retaliation, and preventing a wave of copycat moves in other states.

The Constitution gives Congress the power to set uniform standards for federal elections. Now is the time to use it.

This should not be a partisan issue. Whether it’s Democrats in Sacramento or Republicans in Austin, no one should be allowed to redraw the rules just because they have the votes.

Sign this petition to support Kevin Kiley’s bill to end mid-decade redistricting — and protect fair elections for everyone.
