The Issue

Every day, I witness the unimaginable reality faced by Sacramento's unhoused community. Individuals who, due to unfortunate circumstances beyond their control, must resort to rummaging through garbage cans for their next meal. This sight is haunting and deeply affects me, driving me to create change in whatever modest capacity I can. I've established a small food pantry on my driveway, where I provide non-perishable food, ice packs during our scorching summers, and warm blankets and socks when winter bites. This effort, supported by my compassionate neighbors, is a stepping stone toward tackling a much larger crisis.

Yet, the sad truth is that individual efforts alone are not enough. Sacramento's increasing unhoused population, which as of now exceeds 5,000, is a dire situation demanding urgent intervention and comprehensive solutions from city officials. It is not simply a matter of providing food and warmth; these individuals deserve dignity and opportunities to rebuild their lives. Research indicates that housing-first models, accompanied by supportive services such as mental health and employment counseling, significantly reduce homelessness long-term by addressing the root causes rather than just symptoms.

I am calling upon the city of Sacramento to enact effective policies that will provide tangible and sustainable support to our unhoused citizens. Firstly, expand local food access programs and introduce mobile food services that ensure nutritional support reaches those in most need. Secondly, establish year-round safe shelters that offer more than just temporary refuge – centers where individuals can access essential services that guide them toward self-sufficiency. Finally, engage in partnerships with nonprofits and community leaders who are already making strides in assisting the unhoused population.

In many cities across the country, similar initiatives have proven successful. For instance, in Salt Lake City, homelessness was reduced by 91% using the housing-first model. In Sacramento, we have the capability to replicate such a success by institutionalizing similar programs tailored to our community's needs.

The support of our community residents makes this initiative not only feasible but necessary. Every person deserves to live without fear of hunger or exposure to the elements, and together, we can create a Sacramento that embodies compassion, support, and second chances. I implore you, city officials, to invest in our city’s future and humanity by implementing these crucial changes.

Please sign this petition to urge Sacramento's city leadership to be the change-makers our city desperately needs, ensuring every individual has the fundamental human right to safety and sustenance. Let's transform our compassion into concrete actions that resonate throughout Sacramento and beyond.
