Rahway residents,

Please consider signing this petition in support of the City Of Rahway allocating more funding in the city budget for our wonderful library. 

Currently, due to budget cuts, our Library’s hours will be reduced by 9 hours a week and will no longer offer Saturday hours at all. 

The library will also no longer offer any programming, something that was treasured in our community.  Weekly book clubs, crafting, free lunches for children in the summer, toddler time, ice cream parties, jazz nights, curbside crafts, movies, playgroups, and more will no longer have the funding to continue.

As if these two things alone aren’t devastating enough, the library will not be able to purchase any new physical materials and are also canceling services which give members access to digital materials, such as Hoopla and Kanopy which are integral services for so many members of our community.  The mobile hotspot program will also be discontinued, leaving members of our community without WiFi who rely on these hotspots for everything from doing homework and studying, to entertainment and leisure. 

All of these cuts are also happening as the library’s infrastructure is greatly suffering.  There is a large leak in the children’s section, the air conditioning has had issues this summer, and there have been issues with the front stairs and cracked concrete on the exterior of the building. 

Libraries are pillars of communities. They offer valuable programing at little to no cost, and they service a wide variety of ages and needs, especially for vulnerable populations. We need to fund the library commensurate with its needs so that the programming listed above can continue.  While other city departments have seen their budgets double to triple since 2017, additional library funding from the city (that is over the minimum amount based on state law) was cut by over 75% before being eliminated entirely in the 2024 budget.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Please take action by signing this petition and by emailing your local council person if you live in Rahway. If you’re unsure, find who your council person is here.  City council is also meeting 9/3/2024 at 7pm and 9/9/2024 at 7pm at City Hall. Please consider coming out in support of the library. We need to make our voices heard; our library is too important to our community.

The staff at the library are dedicated members of our community that we all cherish. Additional funding should be allocated as soon as possible so that this valuable programming can continue.  Thank you for your support!

Considere firmar esta petición en apoyo a que la ciudad de Rahway asigne más fondos en el presupuesto de la ciudad para nuestra maravillosa biblioteca. 

Actualmente, debido a recortes presupuestarios, el horario de nuestra biblioteca se reducirá en 14 horas a la semana y ya no ofrecerá horario los sábado. 

La biblioteca tampoco ofrecerá más programación, algo que era muy apreciado en nuestra comunidad.  Los clubes de lectura semanales, manualidades, almuerzos gratuitos para niños en el verano, tiempo para niños pequeños, fiestas con helado, noches de jazz, manualidades en la acera, películas, grupos de juego y más ya no tendrán los fondos para continuar.

Como si estas dos cosas por sí solas no fueran lo suficientemente devastadoras, la biblioteca no podrá comprar ningún material físico nuevo y también cancelará servicios que brindan a los miembros acceso a materiales digitales, como Hoopla y Kanopy, que son servicios integrales para tantos miembros de nuestra comunidad.  El programa de puntos de acceso móvil también se suspenderá, dejando a los miembros de nuestra comunidad sin WiFi que dependen de estos puntos de acceso para todo, desde hacer la tarea y estudiar hasta entretenimiento y placer. 

Todos estos recortes también se están produciendo porque la infraestructura de la biblioteca está sufriendo enormemente.  Hay una gran filtración en la sección de niños, el aire acondicionado ha tenido problemas este verano y ha habido problemas con las escaleras delanteras y el concreto agrietado en el exterior del edificio. 

Las bibliotecas son pilares de las comunidades. Ofrecen programación valiosa a bajo costo o sin costo alguno y atienden a una amplia variedad de edades y necesidades, especialmente para poblaciones vulnerables. Necesitamos financiar la biblioteca de manera proporcional a sus necesidades para que la programación mencionada anteriormente pueda continuar.  Mientras que otros departamentos de la ciudad han visto sus presupuestos duplicarse o triplicarse desde 2017, los fondos adicionales para bibliotecas de la ciudad (que superan la cantidad mínima según la ley estatal) se recortaron en más del 75 % antes de eliminarse por completo en el presupuesto de 2024.

 

 

 

 

Tome medidas firmando esta petición y enviando un correo electrónico a su concejal local si vive en Rahway. Por favor considere salir en apoyo de la biblioteca. Necesitamos hacer oír nuestra voz; nuestra biblioteca es demasiado importante para nuestra comunidad.

El personal de la biblioteca son miembros dedicados de nuestra comunidad que todos apreciamos. Se deben asignar fondos adicionales lo antes posible para que esta valiosa programación pueda continuar.  ¡Gracias por su apoyo!
