Hey, Hey Cell Phone Crew - it’s been awhile.

Things have been moving slowly during the legislative session, but I am very pleased to report that the House of Representatives passed the Governor’s “bell-to-bell” cell phone bill yesterday by a vote of 117-31.

This is a big win, but it’s not law yet. The bill now moves to the Senate, which must vote on it by May 6.

This is where you come in.

Now is the time to contact your state senator and tell them that YOU WANT THIS BILL PASSED! Here’s a simple template email, but feel free to write your own:

RE: Please Support HB 5035 - Phone-Free Schools

Dear Senator [Name],

I am writing to urge you to support HB 5035, establishing a bell-to-bell cell phone ban in Connecticut schools.

It passed with bipartisan support in the House, and I am hopeful the Senate will follow.

Educators across the state overwhelmingly report that constant phone access is hurting student focus, learning, and social interaction. Individual districts have struggled to enforce policies without a clear statewide standard.

This bill brings Connecticut up to speed with much of the rest of the country and gives our students the gift of a distraction free school day.

Few policy changes in education cost this little and have the potential to improve student wellbeing, mental health and learning conditions so significantly.

Thank you for your time and service to our state.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]

Find your Senator Here by typing in your town. Remember, we’re now focused on your State Senator, not Representative.

If you’re a phone call kinda person, call and leave them a message too (phone numbers can also be found here). Staff are tracking those calls. They make an impact, even if you don’t get a call back (you likely won’t).

So, please take a minute to send an email today. Fill their inboxes and make them pay attention. Then text your mom group, your book club, your soccer team and your neighbor and ask them to do it too!

Cheers,

Regina

Never underestimate the power of moms (and dads). If we can figure out summer camp, we can pass this law.
