Support Our Youth-Led Campaign Calling for Social Media Regulations in Canada!
The Issue
We are a group of Canadian youth committed to improving the social media landscape! Contrary to popular belief, many young people care deeply about the negative effects of social media. Our campaign supports sensible restrictions that protect the mental health of children and teenagers and works to prevent tragic outcomes.
Today, 70% of teens say their self-esteem is influenced by social media interactions, 35% of adolescents report feeling unhappy with their bodies after using social media, and 25% of youth who spend more than three hours a day on social media show symptoms of depression and anxiety.
We call on both federal and provincial governments in Canada to pass laws that reduce these harmful effects by implementing stricter regulations on social media companies. Our key proposals include:
- Increased algorithm transparency and controls.
- Restricting the use of personal data in algorithmic recommendations for individuals under 16.
- Preventing social media access for children under age 13.
- Limiting social media features that exploit human psychology.
- A bi-annual governmental report on the mental health impacts of social media.
