My Deaf teacher, an exceptional educator, was recently laid off at a high school because she doesn't have her teaching license. For 20 years, Nicole Kelly has dedicated herself to enriching students' lives, breaking barriers, and proving that a love for teaching transcends any disability. However, due to current licensing requirements, she is unable to secure employment in the educational field she loves. English is not her first language, and this has unfortunately hindered her ability to pass the standard licensing test. 

It's vital to recognize that her teaching abilities and the positive impact she has had on her students are not diminished by her inability to pass a language test. There are ways in which accommodations can be made to help individuals like her continue to contribute to the community as educators.

One solution could be to offer alternative methods of assessment that consider her unique capabilities and experience. Educational institutions should have a path for extraordinary teachers to prove their competency beyond traditional language tests. Additionally, options like providing targeted financial aid and career assistance can help her transition through this difficult period.

We urge educational departments and policymakers to create inclusive certification processes that accommodate people with different language proficiencies and disabilities. These changes can open doors for many talented individuals like my teacher.
