Petition updateSupport Mental Health In The State of New JerseyNew Jersey Landlords Are Under Investigation For Discrimination In Five Counties

As a peer advocate for the mental health community, I found this story disturbing and unfair...because these landlords have been doing this for a long time, treating their tenants with such blatant disrespect and, in most cases, taking advantage of them. I say this not only as a peer advocate for the mental health community but as a tenant of the state of New Jersey who has been subjected to this type of behavior by the landlord of my building, which is owned by EJM Development (also Real Estate Management/Clerkucnj.org) since 2019. And this behavior has been repeated throughout the last three years when COVID-19 was active and lockdowns were in effect. During the lockdowns, on March 15, 2020 (the actual date the pandemic struck the United States), the landlord took advantage of this and raised my rent five times above what was stated in the lease. I took this situation to a lawyer to get the problem straightened out and after a year and a half, it was discovered that the landlord raised the rent, broke the law, and raised the rent on my apartment illegally. And now the company is being investigated for tax evasion by the IRS, which goes back at least two decades or more. I am not surprised at this, because this landlord and the company have disrespected the tenants in my building and all the other buildings they own in cities all over New Jersey. As a peer advocate/tenant, I say that this behavior needs to be investigated and landlords like these need to explore this unjust conduct toward their tenants fully. This behavior is disgusting and needs to be addressed and thoroughly investigated. The punishment should be swift and severe, mainly if this conduct affects tenants who are on Section Eight and senior citizens (whom landlords take advantage of in slums that are owned by landlords who only collect rent and fail to keep their buildings up to code).
