I submitted the following letter to the Wisconsin State Journal on March 9, in regard to their article about former Chief Wray. They never published it, nor would they reply to my query. I'll let you draw your own conclusions.
With all due respect to Noble Wray - I respect him for his service and the fact that he represented the law - I wasn't crazy about the article.
I'm open to helpful dialog on this or any post, but bullying, namecalling, and such will be ignored.
Dear Editor,
It’s hurtful to be armchair quarterbacked by the public, but to have one of your own do it is even more morale-busting. It’s also irresponsible.
Noble Wray should know better than to second-guess the Madison Police Department – especially when he hasn’t been here to witness the carnage. He’s been in DC, while Chief Koval is here, dealing with relentless harassment and scrutiny, a vile Common Council, and an environment of intense hatred for cops.
Wray thinks cops should listen. Yet as chief, he rarely returned emails, and I don’t recall there being as much police-community outreach as we have now.
My husband reached out to his program, COPS to help support MPD, but nobody ever replied. All Chief Koval does is listen. He puts in un-Godly hours – holds forums, speaks in front of groups, reaches out to communities, always avails himself.
He’s the only reason why our Midvale Heights Neighborhood Watch group is successful, and why most Madison residents hold MPD in high regard.
He’s improved department morale, a sentiment repeatedly echoed. From an officer: “When we heard Mike Koval was to be our new chief, we secretly cheered. He’s like a father to us."
All the best.
