Support Jana Shortal against unfair removal
The Issue
Jana Shortal has been a beacon of truth and empathy in journalism, known for her unwavering support and advocacy for marginalized communities. Her reporting has consistently delivered stories that resonate deeply with her audience, shining a light on issues that often go ignored. Jana's unique voice and ability to represent the underrepresented have made her a beloved figure in our community, someone viewers trust and respect.
It is profoundly troubling and disheartening to learn that KARE11 is now owned by Nexstar Media Group, which closed its $6.2 billion acquisition of TEGNA (KARE11's former parent) this past March. Nexstar's CEO thanked President Trump directly for helping the deal get approved, and it's the same company that yanked Jimmy Kimmel off its ABC stations last year over comments about Charlie Kirk. No.official official reason from KARE11 for why Jana was let go, but given that timing, and Jana's history of speaking up for people being bullied, a lot of us aren't buying "it's not political." This MAGA supporting television station has decided to remove her from the airwaves, silencing her vital voice simply because she dared to be herself and speak up for those who are often voiceless. This decision was not just a disservice to Jana, but also to the countless individuals whose stories she championed and to the many viewers who rely on her truthful reporting.
This misplaced action seems grounded in political pressure rather than journalistic integrity. It is a shameful act when an organization caves to external pressures that seek to undermine the diversity of thought and expression that is the bedrock of our society.
To pave the way for a media landscape that values truthfulness, integrity, and the diverse tapestry of voices that comprise our community, we must stand with journalists like Jana Shortall. We must send a clear message that we will not accept unfair treatment of journalists who work tirelessly for the betterment of society.
Let's demand that the television station reconsider its decision and reinstate Jana Shortall to her rightful place on the air. By supporting her, we support the values she embodies: courage, inclusivity, and justice. Join us in making our voices heard by signing this petition. Together, we can help ensure that truth and fairness prevail in our media.
