The Issue

For too long, rising crime and political inaction have put Indianapolis families at risk. While local leaders push softer policies and weaker enforcement, the Indiana General Assembly is finally stepping up with bold legislation to restore order and protect public safety.

We strongly support new proposals that will give our law enforcement community the tools they need to respond to real threats. House Bill 1343 ensures that trained National Guard military police can support local officers during declared emergencies—like riots or terrorist attacks—when timing and coordination are critical. This isn’t about militarizing our streets. It’s about being prepared when every second counts.

We also support efforts like Senate Bill 145 and the proposed constitutional amendment to hold local prosecutors accountable. When repeat offenders are allowed to walk free, and violent crimes go unpunished, something must change. These bills would allow the state to intervene in the most troubled areas, like Indy’s Mile Square, and make sure prosecutions reflect the seriousness of the crimes.

Lastly, we back legislation to rein in politicized civilian oversight boards that have made it harder for police to do their jobs. These boards were created with good intentions, but many have overstepped their roles and undermined officers' ability to keep our neighborhoods safe. Police should be trusted and supported—not micromanaged by untrained panels with political agendas.

Indiana is making it clear: the safety of our communities comes first. It’s time to stop handcuffing the people who protect us and start holding the right people accountable.

We call on the Indiana House and Senate to pass these critical public safety bills and on Governor Mike Braun to sign them into law without delay.
