Support Hart House Restaurant in its bid for a new lease in 2028
The Issue
With a heavy heart yet hopeful spirit, I write this petition as a manager of Hart House Restaurant on beautiful Deer Lake in Burnaby. This iconic establishment, cherished by many for its serene ambiance and exquisite cuisine, faces an uncertain future as our lease draws to a close at the end of 2027. For over 35 years, Hart House has stood as a testament to our community's rich heritage and culinary artistry. Our guests, both locals and tourists, have walked through our doors to relish not just our meals, but to create memories—celebrating anniversaries, weddings, and countless moments that became milestones.
The potential closure of Hart House not only threatens more than four dozen livelihoods but would also erase a significant cultural gem from Burnaby’s landscape. We understand the City of Burnaby's need to periodically reassess leases of city-owned properties. Yet, we believe Hart House’s contributions to the local economy and culture are invaluable and deserving of continued partnership.
Our commitment remains firm: should we secure a renewed lease in 2028, we will continue to build upon our existing sustainable practices, further aligning our efforts with the City's vision for environmental responsibility. We are equally committed to strengthening our longstanding support for local employment, deepening community engagement by making our event spaces available for community activities, and continuing to prioritize locally sourced ingredients and partnerships with local farmers and producers.
According to a recent survey conducted by the Canadian Restaurant Association, independent establishments like ours contribute significantly to community vitality and local economic growth. Hart House alone attracted over 50,000 visitors last year, generating tourism that benefits our entire region. In a time where small businesses face unprecedented challenges, preserving our heritage while fostering economic resilience has never been more crucial.
We implore the Burnaby City Council to consider the depth of impact Hart House has on our community, both culturally and economically. By renewing our lease, the city will not only keep a beloved restaurant alive but demonstrate its commitment to fostering community-oriented businesses that give back.
Join us in our mission to preserve Hart House Restaurant at Deer Lake by signing this petition. Every signature brings us one step closer to securing our future and continuing to serve the community we love. We are deeply grateful for your support.
