Support Granny's Law to Protect Maryland Families
The Issue
The Probate and Estate system is harming ALL families. Granny's Law helps ALL families.
The dark origins of the probate system links back to the era of slavery when the concept of valuing human lives in monetary terms was abhorrently common. Today, while the overt chains of that era are gone, the remnants of its system continue to disproportionately affect women and minorities.
Granny's Law is a progressive step designed to dismantle these injustices, protect families and honor the deceased.
Granny’s Law becoming statutory law will allow the existing language in most written wills to be actualized, undoing historical wrongs of case law, which was formed by telling vulnerable grieving families to ignore the written will and instead follow the directions of expensive lawyers.
The legislation was featured at the 14th Annual Whistleblowers Summit for Civil and Human Rights on Capitol Hill this summer and is supported by Democrats, Independents and Republicans.
This legislation has the support of 15 members of the Maryland General Assembly's Senate and House. It also has the support of grassroots efforts in California, New York, Virginia, Arkansas and Utah.

My grandmother's struggle inspired me to fight for her and for all those without a voice in Maryland, particularly when it comes to the unjust and archaic probate and estate system. This system has deep roots in historical injustices and slavery and continues to perpetuate a harmful cycle, against families. It's time to change this cycle and Granny's Law is the path forward.
If you can easily process something for virtually free why would you ever pay large hourly fees to a lawyer. There are numerous books written on how the probate system harms families.
The current probate system is fraught with inefficiencies and corruption. It's not uncommon for lawyers and judges to take advantage of grieving families, siphoning off funds meant for cherished memories and future stability. This issue isn't just a financial one—it's a moral failure that preys on vulnerability. Families already grappling with the loss of a loved one should not be further burdened with exorbitant legal fees for services that could be simplified and accessible for free.
The Maryland General Assembly is supposed to listen to and help their constituents. Yet some members formed an entire taskforce and excluded constituents. Only Judges and lawyers were on the taskforce and they reaffirmed they know better than family's and constituents what is best for Maryland State residents. This is wrong.
