The issue

In 2023, I found myself in a dark place with no local support options. It was then that I was admitted to Toowong Private Hospital. I was struggling with severe mental health issues, contemplating the unthinkable. Yet, thanks to Toowong's comprehensive care, I rediscovered the joy in life. The hospital's holistic approach, which includes addressing physical health to benefit mental well-being, highlighted just how significant their presence is in Toowong, Queensland.

Toowong Private Hospital has been a beacon of hope for countless individuals across Queensland facing mental health challenges. Their dedicated and compassionate staff provide care that goes above and beyond, making tangible impacts on the lives they touch. My experience isn't unique; it reflects the stories of many who have found life-saving support within those walls. I have been back a couple of times, the most recent stay being to course-correct before slipping too far into another mental health crisis.

This crucial facility is now at risk. Its closure would mean the loss of a vital resource that countless individuals in Toowong and beyond rely upon. It's imperative that we seek government intervention to keep Toowong Private Hospital open for the future of mental health in our community.

Toowong offers a range of programs unique to this hospital. The outreach community programs assists patients in their homes to improve their connection within the community, create a routine in their lives, and someone to help monitor how your health is progressing.

Their veterans program is helping many of our serving former service men and women who have had to serve overseas.

in hospital a range of services are included, such as psychology, occupational therapist, social worker, physiotherapist, exercise physiology, creative therapy and so much more.

This hospital closing will put strain on other hospitals in Queensland as patients travel from all over the state to be admitted here.

The hospital's combination of medical expertise and holistic care makes it an irreplaceable institution for those who need it most. Let us rally together to urge our government to provide the necessary support and funding to ensure its continued operation. In doing so, we are not just saving a building but saving lives.

Join me in reaching out to our leaders and policymakers. Together, let's make our voices heard to safeguard the future of mental health care in Toowong. Sign this petition to demand government assistance for Toowong Private Hospital today.

The Decision Makers

Mark Bailey MP
Dear supporters, Thank you to everyone who signed the petition to save Toowong Private Hospital. The strong community response shows how much this facility means to former patients and their loved ones. As Labor Shadow Health Minister, I'm calling on Premier Crisafulli to intervene immediately and purchase Toowong Private Hospital and roll it into the public health system - just as Labor did with Gladstone Private Hospital in 2020. These beds are desperately needed in our healthcare system. Health Minister Tim Nicholls has wrongly dismissed this hospital as dealing only with "low acuity cases" when the reality is they provide acute care and specialised treatments which are not available elsewhere. Premier Crisafulli must intervene now to purchase and save Toowong Private Hospital. Mark Bailey MP Shadow Minister for Mental Health

Dear Supporters, Thank you for signing the petition to help save the Toowong Private Hospital. As the state member of Parliament for Maiwar, which is home to the Toowong Private Hospital, I wanted to take the opportunity to thank you for your advocacy, and update you on what work me and my team have been doing behind the scenes. I’m angry and frustrated that the hospital is under administration. Part of the reason the hospital has gone into administration is that medical costs have continued to rise, but private health insurance companies haven’t been paying what it actually costs to treat someone at a hospital like this. It is galling that while the private health insurance companies make big profits, places like the Toowong Private Hospital are forced to close, and it’s the patients who are paying the price. We are deeply concerned about the gap this will leave in our already strained mental health system. If the State and Federal governments take mental health care seriously, they’ll step in now - to keep this hospital open, to keep specialist staff employed, and to make sure patients keep getting the care they need. My Federal colleague, Elizabeth Watson-Brown, and I have been putting pressure on the state and Federal governments to step in urgently. We have written to the Federal Health Minister and the Veterans Affairs Minister. I have also reached out to the Queensland Health Minister, calling on the government to step in to help keep the hospital open. The Queensland Government acquired the Gladstone Mater Hospital in 2020 - it could do the same thing again now for the Toowong Private Hospital. I’ve been speaking about the hospital in the media, and I joined a peaceful protest outside the hospital on Monday, organised by past patients. I’ve also taken the opportunity to talk about the hospital closure in Parliament this week. If the state LNP government claims to care about the mental health of Queenslanders, now is their opportunity to put their money where their mouth is. Elizabeth Watson-Brown and I will keep doing all that we can to fight for the hospital. Thanks again for your advocacy for the Toowong Private Hospital. Michael Berkman Greens MP for Maiwar
