Family And Friends Support For Senate Bill #S8945 and Assembly Bill #A10149
Family And Friends Support For Senate Bill #S8945 and Assembly Bill #A10149
The Issue
We are supporting this petition as a family member/ friend of a New York City Probation Officer to respectfully ask that Governor Hochul sign Senate Bill #S8945 and Assembly Bill #A10149 into law .
Every day , New York City Probation Officers , Supervising Probation Officers, and Probation Officers Trainees, dedicate themselves to protecting our communities .They work with individuals involved in the criminal justice system , respond to dangerous situations, conduct field visits in unpredictable environments , supervise high -risk individuals , and often place their own health and safety at risk in service to the people of New York.
What many people do not see is the emotional and physical toll this work takes. The stress of making life and death decisions , responding to crises , and carrying the responsibility of protecting public safety does not end when the workday is over. The families live with the stress as well.
S.8945 and A10149 recognizes the reality that the chronic stress associated with this profession can contribute to serious heart disease. The bill would provide a presumption that qualifying heart conditions suffered by New York City Probation Officers , Supervising Probation Officers and Probation Officers trainees are job related when they meet the requirements of the law, providing them with the protection afforded to many other public safety professionals.
These dedicated public servants are often called upon to work with individuals experiencing violence , addiction, mental illness , trauma, and instability . They serve in neighborhoods throughout New York City and play an essential role in reducing recidivism , supporting rehabilitation , and keeping our communities safe. Their contributions deserve recognition and protection.
As a family member , I know the sacrifices this profession requires. We worry every day when our loved one leaves for work , and we understand the physical and emotional demands that come with the job. Knowing that the State recognizes those risks would provide reassurance that if the unthinkable happens, our families will not be left without support.
This legislation is not about providing a special benefit . It is about fairness. It acknowledges the very real occupational hazards faces by those who ensures they receive the protection they have earned through their service.
Governor Hochul, we respectfully ask you to stand with New York City Probation Officers, Supervising Probation Officers , Probation Officer Trainees and their families by signing S.8945 and A.10149 into law.
Thank you for your time , your leadership , and your consideration of this important legislation.
