The Issue

I am writing to express my support for Scott Stewart’s return to the girls’ lacrosse program and consideration for the girls’ lacrosse coaching position.

I served as the head girls’ lacrosse coach for the past two years and was hired following Scott’s departure from the program. While I do not know the full circumstances surrounding his departure, I can speak directly to my experience with Scott as a coach, colleague, and member of the girls’ lacrosse community.

During my time coaching, Scott remained a valuable resource as I learned the program and navigated the responsibilities of coaching. He was accessible, knowledgeable, and willing to provide guidance when questions arose. Through his previous involvement with the program, his role with the WVSLA, and his knowledge of WVSSAC rules and regulations, he demonstrated a level of experience and understanding that was beneficial to both the program and the broader lacrosse community.

Scott’s commitment to girls’ lacrosse also extended beyond his time as the head coach. Even after leaving the program, he continued attending games and supporting the players. To me, that demonstrated that his investment in the athletes and in the growth of girls’ lacrosse was not dependent on holding a coaching position.

I have also personally observed the professional relationships Scott developed within the lacrosse community. During my time with the program, I was contacted by coaches and athletic directors who knew Scott and spoke positively about their experiences working with him. I also heard from former players and parents who expressed support for his return, as well as referees and other members of the lacrosse community who recognized his knowledge and continued commitment to the sport.

I believe the timing of this decision is particularly important for the future of girls’ athletics. I recently learned that flag football has been added as a sanctioned sport, further expanding opportunities for female athletes within the state. As girls’ athletics continue to grow, it is important that established programs such as girls’ lacrosse have strong, knowledgeable leadership capable of developing the program and supporting its athletes.

Scott brings experience that is directly relevant to that responsibility. He has previous experience with UHS girls’ lacrosse, knowledge of WVSSAC regulations and the WVSLA, a deep understanding of the game, and the coaching experience necessary to build and maintain a successful program. Most importantly, he has demonstrated a continued passion for the sport and for the athletes involved in it.

For these reasons, I believe Scott should be given a fair opportunity to be considered for the position, interview, and speak for himself regarding his qualifications and his interest in returning to the program. My support is based on my firsthand experience working alongside him and observing his continued involvement in girls’ lacrosse.

I respectfully ask that the University High School athletic department, and any additional members of the hiring committee, consider this letter, and the signatures of those who support it, as a demonstration of the community’s interest in seeing Scott Stewart given the opportunity to return to girls’ lacrosse.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
Hailey Mostacciuolo
Former Head Girls’ Lacrosse Coach
