Imagine being a mother or father who has spent decades working hard, paying taxes, and raising children in the United States—children who know no other home but America. Imagine watching your children grow, learn, and dream in a country they call their own, only to face the threat of being torn apart from them due to unfair immigration laws. I am one of those parents, and this is the painful reality that my family, like countless others, is confronting.

Many families are broken up by policies that do not take into account the lives built and contributions made by immigrants who arrived in the United States as children or young adults. They have worked tirelessly, started businesses, and contributed significantly to the economy. Some of these individuals have even served time for juvenile offenses and have since turned their lives around, becoming upstanding and productive members of society. Yet, despite their efforts and achievements, they are unfairly penalized because of their immigration status, which remains unchanged due to bureaucratic hurdles and systemic barriers.

The current immigration system prevents people who have given their all to this country from reaping the benefits of their hard work. They are denied the chance to live without fear, the chance to stay with their families, the chance to prosper in the country they call home. This cruel paradox must end.

We propose reforms that prioritize keeping families together, recognizing the long-term residents who have contributed to our society. These reforms should include pathways to legal status for those who have demonstrated their commitment to the United States, who pay taxes, and who strengthen our communities. Additionally, the system should provide second chances for individuals who, upon finishing their sentences, have shown genuine remorse and rehabilitation. These measures are not only fair but economically beneficial for the country.

This is a call to action for policymakers to amend these archaic laws and make the immigration system more humane and just. Let us demonstrate the true American values of fairness, compassion, and family unity by reforming the legal system that currently divides us.
