Hi everyone! Thank you again for your support of this important project. There have been a lot of questions about the project, so I compiled a list and sent them to the NextGen group to answer. I wanted to share that response with you.

Why isn’t [Pomme de Terre park, Green River, Wells Park] being considered?

These locations were evaluated, but East Side Park was chosen based on factors like accessibility, available space, community input, and alignment with the overall vision of the project. The selected site offers the best opportunity to meet the community’s goals while maximizing benefits for all users.

We already have playgrounds in our community. Why do we need another one?

While there are some great playground options in our community, there is currently no known inclusive playground within 50 miles of Morris. This project ensures that there is a space for every child in our community and surrounding communities to play.

What does “inclusive” mean?

“Inclusive” refers to designing a space that welcomes and accommodates individuals of all abilities, ages, and backgrounds. This includes wheelchair-accessible features, sensory-friendly play equipment, and opportunities for everyone to participate and enjoy the park.

How will this project be funded?

Funding will come from a combination of sources, including grants, private donations, and potential partnerships with local businesses or organizations. Transparency about funding will be maintained throughout the process.

What steps are being taken to conserve green space in the park?

Efforts to conserve green space include prioritizing the preservation of existing trees and planting new ones in cases where preservation isn’t possible. The playground equipment has been strategically reoriented to maximize efficiency, resulting in an increase in usable green space without altering the park’s overall square footage.

What safety measures will be in place?

Safety measures will include:

·  Modern, impact-absorbing playground surfaces

·  Clear signage

·  Fencing

·  Compliance with safety standards for equipment and park design

Will the planned and existing infrastructure be equipped to handle a park this size (e.g., increased traffic, parking space, crosswalks, precipitation runoff, etc.)?

The project includes a phased approach to upgrading infrastructure:

         •       Phase 1: Expansion of parking to accommodate increased use.

         •       Phase 2: Updates to the picnic area and the addition of fully accessible, ADA-compliant restrooms.

         •       Phase 3: Renovations to the bandshell to enhance its functionality and appeal for community events.

This phased plan ensures thoughtful, sequential improvements that address key areas of the park.

What is the ongoing cost of maintaining and repairing the new playground and parking lot? How will this be funded?

Maintenance costs will be factored into the city’s annual budget, which already allocates funding for park updates as determined by the park board and city council. Additionally, a dedicated maintenance fund will be established as part of the fundraising efforts, with assistance from the community. Estimated costs and funding sources will be shared with the public to ensure transparency.

What age ranges does this playground cater to? Are there plans to expand the playspace to include a broader age range?

The playground is designed for children aged 2–12, however anyone is welcome to play regardless of their age.

Will there still be a bandshell and picnic space?

Yes, the bandshell and picnic areas will remain integral features of the park, ensuring space for gatherings, performances, and community events.

Can community members without children still enjoy East Side Park? How?

Absolutely. East Side Park will feature sidewalks, green spaces, picnic areas, and other amenities for everyone to enjoy. Community input has guided the design to ensure it meets the needs of all residents, not just families with children.

Thank you again for your consideration. Please continue to spread the word about this project!
