Support Flexibility in School Attendance for Family Holidays

Support Flexibility in School Attendance for Family Holidays
The Issue
Across the globe, millions of parents face financial penalties for taking their children out of school during term time for family holidays. These fines contribute to worsening financial pressures on families while also denying children the potential benefits of enriching travel experiences. In England alone, the number of fines produced for unauthorised absences, including holidays, increased by 75% from the academic year 2016/17 to 2017/18 (Department for Education, England). To combat this, it is essential that the education system incorporates a degree of flexibility into its attendance policy.
We propose a framework which allows each student a flexible week of absence per academic year, while considering the importance of safeguarding significant curriculum dates. This would not only relieve the economic burden on parents but could also contribute positively to a child's holistic education that extends beyond the classroom. The enriching experiences gained from travelling can often augment a student's understanding of diverse cultures, encourage independence, and build resilience (Learning Away Consortium report).
We urge policymakers to consider this change and recognize the wider benefits it brings to a child's overall growth. Please sign this petition, support our cause, and help us advocate for flexibility in our education system's attendance policies.
