Support Fair and Just Treatment for My Case

Support Fair and Just Treatment for My Case
The Issue
I am reaching out from a personal standpoint, feeling wronged and unfairly treated by the legal system. My actions, as I hold my hands up to them, do not match the punishment I am receiving. There are discrepancies in our judicial system where nuanced context and individual circumstances often get overlooked. This has led to instances where punishments don’t fit the crimes, which adversely affects countless lives.
The Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that about 2.2 million adults were held in the nation's prisons and jails at the end of 2016 - an upheaval caused, in part, due to these systemic issues. It is imperative that we address these flaws in our justice system.
I implore you to support my call for justice and help me combat this disproportionate response. Your signatures will contribute greatly towards my fight, as well as send a strong message that it is time we prioritize legal fairness. Please sign my petition. Let's ensure that justice does not just serve the law, but serves humanity as well.
My name is Joseph Martell, and I am reaching out for help. I am currently facing federal charges related to 400+ grams of fentanyl and have been offered a 17-year sentence. I am 40 years old and have struggled with addiction for much of my life.
In July 2023, I was released from prison with nothing but a bus ticket and no real support system. Without guidance or stability, I fell back into addiction. Out of desperation, I purchased what I later realized was fake fentanyl. I ultimately threw it away, cutting ties with the person I bought it from. Despite this, 2 months later the guy gets arrested with a large amount. I am now being named in his case and held responsible for a large quantity of drugs that were never even in my possession.
I was arrested in January 2024—less than six months after my release—and now I am facing a sentence that does not reflect my reality. I take full responsibility for my addiction and poor choices, but I believe that 17 years in prison is not justice. What I needed was support, treatment, and a chance to rebuild my life.
I am a kindhearted person who made mistakes, but my punishment does not fit my crime. I am asking anyone who hears my story to help in any way they can—whether through legal guidance, advocacy, or simply sharing my plea.
Please, if you can offer any assistance, I would be deeply grateful.
Sincerely,
Joseph Martell
