Hello fellow San Antonian students,

We are the 2025-2026 San Antonio Youth Climate Council’s Renewable Energy and Climate Technology group. We are a group of concerned students who hope to make meaningful change to our city’s climate awareness and policies, and we need your help. Our goal for this petition is to convince school district officials to consider electric school buses and attend an electric school bus training, and we would love your contribution to help support this initiative.

The reason we care so much about the implementation of electric school buses at our schools is because of the environmental and economic drawbacks from diesel-powered school buses. First of all, these buses burn fossil fuels, releasing greenhouse gases that accelerate climate change. These gases not only act as respiratory irritants, harming human health, but also will be harmful to future generations by accelerating the greenhouse effect. To combat this, if our schools swap to electric buses, the EPA states that we could reduce our emissions by 23 metric tons per bus per year.

Continuing this point, electric buses produce zero tailpipe emissions, significantly reducing the amount of toxic chemicals (e.g. nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, hydrocarbons) released by these engines. Additionally, these buses reduce noise pollution which can help create a better environment for students, adults, and even animals near roadways. Moreover, these buses also prove to be more cost effective over time, requiring lower fuel and maintenance costs while also allowing schools to get government grants to help pay for them.
