The OpenMind Project - Mental Health Is Real

Within the Trump administration cutting the funding for mental health hotlines, including the Trevor Project, Bipartisan Safe Communities Act, and the 988 Crisis line, we deem it as our unwritten duty to take action

Mental health isn't optional, it's essential. And yet, while life-saving services like the 988 & Crisis Lifeline face devastating budget cuts, politicians are pouring money into flashy, performative proposals such as the “Big Beautiful Bill”. A bill that claims to care about mental health but diverts funds from real, community-based care toward hollow awareness campaigns and photo ops.

As a group of young women, we understand what it means to actually be heard and when it is lacking. Not through a billboard but through connection. We founded The Open Mind Project to build that connection in our community. We are a youth-led organization fighting for accessible, trauma-informed mental health care, not vague promises or political distractions

What's Wrong with the “Big Beautiful Bill”?

The Big Beautiful Bill slashes medicaid funding by billions of dollars, which could cause 8-11 million people to lose their health insurance including women, children, people with disabilities, and seniors.
It strips funding from grassroots programs and youth-led initiatives in favor of top-down “messaging campaigns”
It offers no structural investment in school counseling, local clinics, or crisis response networks.
It cuts support to healthcare resources such as the 988 Lifeline, just as youth suicide rates continue to rise.
It makes no room for youth voices, despite claiming to serve us
They call it “beautiful”. We call it dangerous. This bill silences the very people it claims to protect, we’re not staying quiet, because silence is what they count on.
