Support Covered Parking in Arizona to Combat Extreme Heat

Support Covered Parking in Arizona to Combat Extreme Heat
The Issue
Petition: Support Covered Parking in Arizona to Combat Extreme Heat
To: Arizona State and Local Officials, City Planners, Property Developers, and Business Owners
Subject: Implement Covered Parking to Protect Arizonans from Extreme Heat
We, the undersigned, call on government officials, city planners, and property developers throughout Arizona to make covered parking a standard feature in public, residential, and commercial developments.
Arizona’s intense heat—especially in the summer months—creates serious health, safety, and quality-of-life concerns. Cars parked under direct sunlight can reach dangerously high interior temperatures in minutes, putting children, pets, and vulnerable individuals at risk. Moreover, the excessive heat causes damage to vehicle interiors, increases the need for air conditioning (raising emissions), and contributes to urban heat island effects.
We believe that covered parking should be prioritized for the following reasons:
• ✅ Public Health & Safety: Protect citizens from burns and heat-related illnesses.
• ✅ Environmental Benefits: Reduce energy consumption and emissions from overheated vehicles.
• ✅ Vehicle Longevity: Shield cars from UV damage, prolonging the life of interiors and electronics.
• ✅ Urban Cooling: Reduce pavement heat absorption and help lower surrounding temperatures.
• ✅ Equity & Accessibility: Ensure vulnerable populations—including seniors and families with young children—have safer access to parking.
We respectfully urge the adoption of building codes and local ordinances that require or incentivize covered parking structures, solar panel-integrated shade systems, or tree-covered lots in all future developments—and the retrofitting of high-traffic lots in areas with extreme heat.
Let’s work together to make Arizona safer, smarter, and more sustainable.
Sign this petition today and be part of the solution to Arizona’s extreme heat challenges.
