The Issue

The scale of development proposed is a major concern for our community. Clapham is already facing significant planned growth ( 500 homes at Milton Road). We believe the impact of another development of 570 homes should not be considered in isolation. The combined effect on these developments on traffic, roads, infrastructure ,drainage, services and local environment needs to be properly assessed.

One of our biggest concerns is traffic congestion.  Although Highbury Grove is not proposed as the primary access, its use as a secondary route could still introduce additional traffic into an area that is already experiencing parking and traffic difficulties. On-street parking currently restricts available road space and can make it difficult for vehicles to pass safely, particularly when traffic volumes increase. Furthermore, the accumulation of multiple developments in our region could strain local infrastructure, leaving residents to deal with the consequences of overburdened roads and insufficient public transport options. Sainsbury's roundabout already experiences heavy traffic during peak times. The addition of hundreds of homes could generate a substantial increase in vehicle movements across the wider road network, potentially adding further pressure to existing congestion points.

The proposal would also change the rural setting of Clapham.  Developing on open land on the edge of the village would change the character and landscape of the area. We want the effects on landscape, biodiversity, drainage and the wider environment to be properly assessed before any decisions are made.

There are also legitimate concerns about infrastructure and local services. A development of this scale would create additional demand for roads, schools, healthcare, public transport, drainage, recreation and other community facilities.

We understand the need for new homes, but development on this scale needs to be properly assessed and supported by the infrastructure our community needs. If you live in Clapham or care about the future of our village, please sign this petition and share it with your neighbours, friends and family. Your signature will help demonstrate that local residents want their voices heard and that the impact of this development must be fully considered before any decisions are made. Together, we can make sure Clapham's future is planned responsibly, with the needs of both existing and future residents in mind.
