Support Black Flourishing at Capilano University!
The Issue
Join the Capilano Students’ Union and the Black Student Union in calling on Capilano University to sign onto the Scarborough Charter, and to begin developing an institutional action plan to address anti-Black racism and Black inclusion.
We know that anti-Black racism is a problem across the post-secondary education system in Canada, and Capilano University is no exception. The Capilano Students’ Union and Black Student Union are asking Capilano University to sign onto the Scarborough Charter as a way of being accountable for its commitment to Black flourishing and its commitment to addressing anti-Black racism.
Starting in 2020, a number of universities, colleges, and other community partners came together in conversation to start the development of a charter to address anti-Black racism and Black inclusion across the post-secondary system. Drawing from these important community conversations, an Inter-Institutional Advisory Committee for the National Dialogues and Action drafted the principles, actions, and accountability measures that now make up the Scarborough Charter.
The Scarborough Charter is a framework through which every charter signatory can develop a “contextually-appropriate, best-efforts-based, individual institutional action plan.” The charter includes guidance on how to address anti-Black racism and Black inclusion in governance, research, teaching and learning, and community engagement, and the importance of establishing an accountability framework for progress.
