Hey Martin County Neighbors! This is a petition to show support for allowing backyard chickens in Martin County, FL. Currently, only properties zoned for agriculture are allowed to keep backyard chickens. This leaves out a lot of people who would like to keep chickens in a clean, non-nuisance, responsible manner. We would like to see the ordinance for chickens become less restrictive because keeping chickens can be so beneficial. 

Some benefits include: 

Fresh eggs: the best tasting, healthiest eggs

Pest Control: Chickens are great at eating unwanted insect pests. 

Compost: Chicken manure produces natural nitrogen rich compost for your home garden.

Go Green: We're all looking for ways to keep things out of landfills. Chickens can eat so many vegetable scraps as special treats. What you decide to not give them can go into that compost pile. It stays out of the garbage!

Food Sustainability and Self Sufficiency: Having control over how your food is farmed and producing food in a humane manner. 

Education and Teaching Responsibility: It can be so much fun and so educational for those of all ages to learn about chickens and how to take care of them. 

Renewed Appreciation for Agriculture: In a world where farming is so needed but also so overlooked. We can see first hand what goes into raising animals and farming our food. Who knows, maybe we could raise up some new future farmers!
