Support Ayat Ullah and His Family: Refugees in Dire Need

The Issue

We bring to your attention the urgent situation of Ayat Ullah, an 18-year-old refugee currently living in Pekanbaru, Indonesia. This brave young man has been separated from his family for several years, with his father residing in Malaysia and his mother and sisters in Bangladesh. The separation and the hardship they endure daily is a testament to the struggles faced by countless individuals fleeing conflict and persecution worldwide.

Recently Ayat's mother and sisters embarked on a perilous journey to Indonesia. After many days travelling by sea in dangerous conditions, they arrived safely. This was a great relief to Ayat. However, they quickly realized that they were not safe yet.

Despite Ayat's valiant efforts to secure his family's release, the smugglers have persisted in their ransom demands, threatening their safety and well-being. Ayat paid for them to be released, but they were still not. Ayat's bravery in leading authorities to the smugglers' den resulted in their arrest. Still, the situation has only worsened since then.

Tragically, the smugglers are part of a more extensive network, and their impending release poses an imminent threat to Ayat and his family. A bounty of 50 million rupiahs has been placed on Ayat's head, and photo proof of his death will increase it by another 100 million, further exacerbating their perilous situation.

Compounding their distress, Ayat's mother and sisters remain detained in the same facility as the smugglers, further exposing them to potential harm upon their release.

Despite efforts to seek assistance from the International Organization for Migration (IOM)) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Ayat and his family continue to face uncertainty and danger. While the UNHCR has indicated they are working on moving Ayat and his family, bureaucratic delays and governmental approval processes have hindered their efforts.

We are asking the UNHCR, IOM, and Indonesian government to keep Ayat's family safe by relocating them immediately and not releasing the smugglers until they have been moved to a secure location.

Please join us in advocating for Ayat and his family's right to safety and protection by signing this petition and sharing it with others. Your signature can make a difference in urging those with power to act swiftly. Together, we can make a difference in their lives and ensure they receive the assistance and support they so desperately need.
