Support AB1423 to Ban Toxic PFAS (Forever Chemicals)

The Issue

AB1423 is a bill in the California legislature that would ban the manufacturing, distributing, selling, and offering for sale of products containing per- and polyfluoroalkyl / PFAs, better known as forever chemicals. The PFAs would need to be replaced with the least toxic alternative

The EPA links PFAs to numerous health impacts, including cancer, liver and thyroid and kidney damage, autoimmune diseases, decreased fertility, developmental problems in children, interference with natural hormones, increased cholesterol, and birth defects. Not only is PFAs extremely toxic, but it, as its name suggests, does not biodegrade and accumulates over time. A study by the CDC going since 1999 found four types of PFAs in nearly all the blood serum of those they tested, indicating widespread exposure in the US population.

In addition to the effects on human health, PFAs are also very toxic to the environment. PFAs from sources such as artificial turf seep through soil and can contaminate groundwater reserves and other bodies of water. Like in humans, PFAs also accumulate in fish and other wildlife, resulting in similar harms to those done to humans.

AB1423 would greatly decrease the amount of PFAs entering the environment and mitigate the negative effects caused by PFAs.
