Support a low-barrier shelter in Nashua, New Hampshire
The Issue
Homelessness in Nashua is growing, and more of our neighbors are being left without safe, stable shelter. Many are sleeping outdoors, in vehicles, or other unsafe locations because existing shelters are already full. Rising housing costs, along with mental health and substance use challenges, have made it harder for people to regain stability. Last year's camping ban further limited options by making it illegal to camp on public property or shelter in parked recreational vehicles.
These are not strangers. They are our neighbors, friends, and fellow community members. A low-barrier shelter would provide immediate safety from the elements while connecting people with services, treatment, and pathways to permanent housing.
We urge community leaders, local officials, and residents to support the creation of a low-barrier shelter in Nashua. Sign this petition and contact your Board of Alderman representatives to help ensure that everyone in our community has a safe place to turn and a path toward a more stable future.
Our Proposed Solution:
- New shelter beds to support the current unsheltered population, with space for overflow
- Low-barrier access to shelter and services
- No income or savings requirements
- No ID required
- Open 24/7, no entry curfew
- Pet-friendly
- On-site case management and supportive services
- ADA-accessible rooms, bathrooms, and showers
- Clear safety and community expectations:
- No weapons
- No violent or aggressive behavior
