The Issue

I travel frequently between Santa Rosa and Sacramento for work and family. Every trip currently takes 2½–3 hours by car, or I have to connect through San Francisco or Oakland, which is stressful and time-consuming. A nonstop flight would save me hours, reduce stress, and make it easier to attend important meetings, visit loved ones, and support local businesses in both regions. I know I’m not alone — many residents and professionals in Sonoma County would benefit from faster, safer, and more convenient travel.

Currently, traveling between these two important cities without a direct flight means delays, long drives, and added costs. The introduction of a direct flight between Santa Rosa's Charles M. Schulz–Sonoma County Airport (STS) and Sacramento International Airport (SMF) would offer a much-needed solution, facilitating easier access for business and leisure travelers alike. As someone who understands the challenges firsthand, it's imperative that we push for this direct flight to improve our travel experiences while supporting regional economic growth.

According to the U.S. Census, both Santa Rosa and Sacramento have experienced significant population growth over the past decade. Increases in residents inherently lead to increased demand for streamlined travel options. This need for efficient connectivity is further amplified by the multifaceted relationships between the communities in these regions, encompassing business ties, academic exchanges, tourism, and personal commitments.

Moreover, reducing travel times and providing direct routes aligns with environmental efforts to lower emissions. Direct flights reduce overall fuel consumption compared to multiple connecting flights or long car rides, supporting both sustainability goals and the growing demand for eco-friendly travel options.

A direct flight would not only provide convenience and efficiency for travelers but also boost both local economies by attracting more businesses and travelers. Local businesses, such as hotels, restaurants, and service providers in both cities, would see increased patronage, ultimately benefiting our communities.

We urge the airlines servicing STS and SMF, alongside local government and airport authorities, to consider the positive impact this route would have on thousands of commuters and the greater community. Join me in advocating for a direct flight between Santa Rosa and Sacramento, and let’s take a step toward improving our travel experiences and supporting our local economies.
