Protect Volunteer Park

5 Jan 2017
Even thou SAM is acting like the deal is sealed, the public can still halt the expansion from moving forward if enough of us continue to take action… it is not too late! We the people are powerful. The Protect Volunteer Park team has some things in the works, some of which need to wait a few weeks before we can talk about.
We started a sister website: www.thinkagainSAAM.org to highlight for everyone the alternatives for the SAAM expansion. SAM has already expanded the Gould building at least four times. They could expand underground under the west patio and in unexcavated areas within the existing building’s footprint. Other world class museums, like the Louvre in Paris and the Palace of Legion of Honor in San Francisco, have done this successfully. The Frick Art Museum in NYC is expanding underground after the people petitioned them to save the Frick’s landmark garden. Expanding underground is an excellent way to preserve both the historic landmark park as well as the landmark building and perhaps give us a better design. Besides the taking of parkland the current design lacks sensitivity and has a corporate feel and on top of that it is not sustainable. Surely SAAM can do better for all of us?
As a result of all our efforts the supporters of SAAM started their own change.org petition and sadly they are hundreds of signers ahead of us in showing support for expansion. We need to be active to protect Volunteer Park or the museum will swallow it up and set a bad precedent for the taking of parkland. Parks around the country are continually being threatened by new building. We need to hold firm and protect our parks for future generations.
Please pass this petition on to others to sign and upload to Facebook. Visit our new website: www.thinkagainSAAM.org and go to: www.protectvolunteerpark.org to see what more you can do to further support Volunteer Park.
Thank you for your efforts,
Protect Volunteer Park Team
