Create Consent Courses in MPS Schools
The Issue
As of now, MPS public school have no official courses to teach kids the topic of consent in sexual relationships. Harvard Graduate School of Education's Grace Tatter, talks about how consent can and should be taught at all ages. Its essential to help lower the rates of sexual harassment, assault, rape, etc.. I will link the article down below. As a student at a MPS public High School, I have seen and know schools reactions, or lack there of, to assault allegations. Female identifying people are targeted as victims of sexual assault and if we give everyone the opportunity to learn about consent, we can help create a more safe and open culture in schools.
Joe Biden's new American rescue plan will provide the MPS schools with 249 million dollars for academic funding. This money could help to provide sexual assault victims spaces to talk about their experiences, teach students about consent, make victims feel safer, etc..
Rape culture has become common and unavoidable in our lives. With this new funding, we can help to provide a safer community for victims of assault and all students to learn about the problems around consent. Students should be able to ask questions, learn, and feel comfortable when talking about consent and the ideas around it.
As a community and a country, I know we can help to create a safer environment for everyone. Its important to support one another and create a safe learning space. If you sign this petition, you are helping to make MPS schools and communities a safer space for the students of the present and future.
