Make the old State Street school the new home to the Newark Public Schools Archives!

As Newark celebrates its 350th anniversary, former Newark superintendent Marion Bolden is asking everyone to join the call to action to find a permanent home for the city's public school archives.

There's no better place than the old State Street School building located at 15 State Street. It was first opened in 1845 as the school for "colored girls" and is the oldest school building still standing in the city of Newark.

Why make State Street the home for Newark Public School archives?

  1. Highest and best use. The building is already listed on the state and national registers of historical places, making it highly unlikely that it will be sold for another purpose. Unless we act now, the building will sit vacant and continue to deteriorate.
  2. Location. The building is in a triangle of historic places making it a prime location for the district's museum. It sits next door to the Plume House, home to one of Newark's early settlers from the mid 1700's.

Let's give Superintendent Chris Cerf a chance to leave a lasting legacy by protecting the history of the Newark Public Schools. Ask Superintendent Cerf to make the old State Street School the home for district's archives.

Saving the history of the city's schools has been the personal mission of Dr. Bolden. She founded the Newark Public Schools Historical Preservation Committee in 2009 after seeing yearbooks, trophies and school records dating back to the late 1800's being cast aside.

The archives have been without a home since their founding, first being moved from Barringer High School and most recently being locked out of the Warren Street school by former superintendent Cami Anderson. Everyday, without a permanent home, important artifacts are at risk of being lost forever to decay and improper care and storage. Act NOW to save the city's school history!
