No Mandatory Pass/Fail for Second Semester in Sequoia Union HS District

The Issue

Students in the Sequoia Union High School District have spent the better part of the semester working incredibly hard to improve their GPAs and prepare for college applications. While distance learning has been a struggle and we understand that the School Board would like to help students who have limited access to technology, we believe that forcing students to take this semester Pass/No Pass would not benefit anyone in the community. In the School Board meeting on 04/06/2020, many different trustees repeatedly cited inequity as a reason to make grade P/NP, but there has been a general lack of regard for student opinion, as many students and teachers have vocalized their opinions but have not been listened to. We believe that policies like Hold Harmless, which would give all students letter grades, but ones that could only improve from the letter grade that they held on the last day of traditional instruction, are fairer. This is not a binary choice, and other policies should be considered. Alternative policies would eliminate inequality but allow students to see the reward of their hard work.
