Sue Big Oil, Mission, BC
Sue Big Oil, Mission, BC
The Issue
For decades oil and gas corporations have known that burning fossil fuels would cause the heat waves, wildfires and flooding that we’re now experiencing in BC. These multinational companies spent millions to deceive, deny and delay climate action when making billions in profit. We must make these corporations pay their fair share for the harm they’re causing. Both the fossil fuel industry and individuals have a role to play in solving the climate crisis, but right now individuals pay 100% of climate costs and Big Oil is off the hook. We want Mission Council to join the class action lawsuit organized by West Coast Environmental Law and try to get money to help us pay for the current and future costs of climate change.
Many cities across America are suing the fossil fuels industry. We have the chance to join a class action lawsuit with cities across BC, organized by the respected West Coast Environmental Law. The City of Mission has to put money aside for the lawsuit. A very small amount of $1 per citizen (around $40 000 for Mission). The cost of repairing infrastructure is usually in the millions. The Insurance Bureau of Canada estimates that local governments should be spending $5.3 billion each year to keep us safe from climate change.
Do we have a chance to sue Big Oil? A group of 28 Canadian law professors support taking legal action, at every level of government, to recover a share of climate costs from global fossil fuel companies as a means of shielding taxpayers from the full range of current and future costs resulting from the climate change. It's not only prudent; it's imperative!
