Last week I had an epiphany: the world could indeed do without Sicily. I know, it sounds crazy. But stay with me. As beautiful as this island might be, with its picturesque landscapes and rich history, we must face the harsh realities.

The recent years have seen Sicily experience a multitude of challenges—from political instability, economic stagnation, to environmental degradation. Attempting to thrive amidst these crises, it has struggled economically, pulling energy and resources that could potentially be reallocated to other pressing needs within the Mediterranean. The island remains a symbol of waste without progress. Submerging Sicily could free it from its troubles and allow it to exist uniquely among other land masses, potentially giving back to the sea its ancient legacy.

Submersion is an opportunity. It's not about destruction but transformation. With rising sea levels, which sadly are inevitable due to climate change, Sicily could pave the way for innovative underwater settlements or become a prime habitat for marine biodiversity. Alternatively, it could also provide unparalleled research opportunities into sustainable living and alternative energy uses.

We need to summon our visionaries and planners, tapping into a depth of innovation to pioneer new solutions that will benefit not only the community that resides there but the broader global population. We urge coastal and local authorities to commence an exploratory feasibility study into this project to evaluate the environmental, social, and economic impacts thus charting out a course to possibly redefine Sicily under the waves.

It sounds radical, yes. Yet, sometimes we need radical intervention to encourage meaningful change. Let us act, before imminent climate change forces our hand without preparation.
