The Issue

Beachwood residents love our library. We want a branch that serves our community for generations. But moving our library to Fairmount Blvd. would put that investment in the wrong place and harm the neighborhoods around it.

More than 160 residents have already signed our paper petition. We’re now bringing this effort online so every Beachwood resident can have a voice.

As currently planned, moving the library to Fairmount would mean:

  • Quiet residential streets become cut-throughs for library traffic.
  • A third traffic signal comes to Fairmount, adding congestion to a key corridor.
  • No funding has been set aside to replace the ballfields residents use every day, and even if it’s found, families would lose them for multiple seasons.
  • Middle schoolers lose a beloved after-school space. Today the library is steps from school, but the new site would be a 20-minute walk away, and in a Cleveland winter, many simply won’t make the trip.
  • 100+ mature trees are cut down.
  • The Fairmount median is torn apart.
  • Backyards become targets for baseballs, and soccer balls end up on a main road, putting drivers and kids at risk.

These impacts are too significant to decide without facts.  We ask our city and school leaders to:

  1. Make no preliminary or final decision on this site until independent professional studies are completed on the environmental, traffic, and economic impacts; and
  2. Hold advertised public hearings once those studies are complete, so residents can review the findings and be heard before any decision is made.

This isn’t about stopping a library. It’s about getting it right. A project this important deserves careful study, a transparent process, and real community input

Beachwood deserves a great library in the right location. Please sign and share with your neighbors.

“You are receiving this message because you signed the “Study First, Decide Later: No Beachwood Library Vote Without Public Hearings”. The Cuyahoga County Public Library (CCPL) has withdrawn its application for final site plan approval from the Planning and Zoning Commission's October 29 meeting, requesting more time to evaluate traffic ingress and egress associated with the proposed project. The Planning and Zoning Commission will schedule a special meeting in late November or early December to consider the proposed final site plan. In response to residents' concerns about potential traffic impacts, the City of Beachwood has commissioned a traffic study to further evaluate these issues. The results of this study will be provided to Planning and Zoning Commission members ahead of the special P&Z meeting to help inform their review and consideration of the proposed site plan. The public will also have access to the study results. Additionally, a Community Input Session for Beachwood residents, hosted by the Beachwood Board of Education and City of Beachwood, is scheduled for Thursday, November 12, at 7:00 p.m., in the Beachwood High School Community Room. This session will provide residents with an opportunity to share feedback and participate in discussions about specific elements of the proposed project. Using the existing conceptual site plan as a starting point, the discussion will focus on gathering community input and exploring potential solutions and preferences related to: • Traffic circulation and neighborhood impacts • Parking and site access • Landscaping and site aesthetics • Recreational field layout and configuration The City, CCPL, and Beachwood City Schools are also working collaboratively to develop a comprehensive Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document. This resource will address common resident questions, clarify each project partner's responsibilities, and provide accurate information on aspects of the proposal that have generated questions or misunderstandings. The FAQ will be shared with the community once finalized. Thank you for your interest in this project. We look forward to your continued engagement as this project moves forward.
