Keep our school name “Canton Chiefs”

Keep our school name “Canton Chiefs”
The Issue
There are some that believe we should change our name and no longer be called the “Canton Chiefs.” They say the name is “offensive” and “outdated.” A chief (in Native American terms) is a high ranking member of a tribe. By definition a chief is a leader or a ruler. This should not be offensive because it can be a reference to Native American culture that allows that culture to live on. It shows that those lucky enough to call themselves a “Canton Chief” are leaders and have the power to influence others and persevere through obstacles. But it doesn’t even need to be associated with Native American culture. A chief can be anyone who is a leader among their peers. Therefore I believe we should keep the name, as it shows we are strong influential individuals who have the ability to lead and inspire those around us.
