Student Trustees Need a Vote NOW

Student Trustees Need a Vote NOW
The Issue
This is a joint student-led petition for the Carbondale and Edwardsville campuses of the Southern Illinois University System. The purpose is to urge Governor Rauner to appoint one of the elected Student Trustees to have a vote on the SIU Board of Trustees. For the past two years neither Campus has had a student vote on the Board. It is time that the current law is enacted and students of the SIU System are fully represented.
Dear Governor Rauner,
As the students of the Carbondale and Edwardsville campuses of Southern Illinois University System, we are writing regarding the veto of House Bill 4113 which would have allowed both elected Student Trustees to be voting members of the SIU Board of Trustees. While we understand the viewpoint of the veto, we respectfully request that you exercise your ability, prescribed by current law, to appoint one of the Student Trustees a vote to represent the students of the SIU System.
There are over 31,000 students in the SIU System and we very much believe in the importance of expressing our voice by allowing one of the two elected Student Trustees the ability to cast a vote. We know you share our belief in the importance of that representation; therefore, a student vote is needed now and no longer should be delayed.
Sincerely,
Students, Southern Illinois University System.
