The issue

What do we have to do? On May 22, 2019 a man punched a 14 year old girl in the face at a Swanson BP, knocking her down. He was cautioned by police but not charged with male assaults female, or any assault charge. On 6 June, 2019 a man verbally abused a mother and her 17 year old daughter in a racist attack. He assaulted the mother, who was prevented from being knocked to the floor when her daughter caught her. The police have not charged the man with male assaults female. In both cases CCTV footage is available. These are just two recent examples that made the media. There will be more.

We have marched,  written articles, written poems, held vigils, and talked about the need to stop male violence against women in Aotearoa/New Zealand. We have talked long and hard about the need to stop racist violence. It's not up to the police to give violent men a free pass. What do the women in this country have to do to be taken seriously by the force meant to protect them? NZ police need to lay male assaults female charges when males assault females. We have the law  - give us a guarantee you will enforce it.
