Across the world, there is a rising crisis of image-based sexual abuse. This covers offences such as so-called 'revenge porn', deepfakes, and cyber-flashing. In April, during lockdown, calls to Revenge Porn hotlines increased 100%.
However, laws are failing survivors and in 2017-18 only 7% of cases led to charges in England and Wales. These offences aren't even deemed 'sexual offences' under current legislation, meaning that survivors have no right to anonymity. Survivors also have to prove harmful intent. Currently perpetrators can get off by saying they were 'only doing it for a laugh'. This has to stop.
Hashtags and social media posts are not enough. Following Weinstein's arrest and #MeToo we need to update our failing laws, and create tangible change. We need actions, not just words.
Please sign and share this petition #MyImageMyChoice to send a clear message that sexual abuse of any kind will not be tolerated.
