Gun violence in Sweden has reached alarming levels, claiming the lives of innocents with the punishments for carrying illegal weapons being too lenient. I have personally lost two friends, both innocently caught in this wave of violence. It is crucial, for the victims and their grieving families, that these senseless killings cease. To truly deter criminals, Sweden must institute harsher penalties for those carrying illegal weapons and committing violent crimes.

Current laws do not provide a sufficient deterrent for criminals. Those convicted for multiple rapes often receive a consolidated sentence, which diminishes the gravity of each crime. It is imperative that each act of violence is acknowledged, with separate sentencing to reflect the severity of such offenses.

Moreover, the mere possession of an illegal firearm should be met with a minimum of 10 years imprisonment. If someone is found in possession of multiple illegal weapons, each weapon should warrant an additional 10-year sentence. For instance, owning three illegal firearms should result in a 30-year prison term. This approach emphasizes the serious nature of these crimes and would signal unequivocal intolerance for gun violence.

Strengthening these laws will not only serve justice to the victims but also send a strong message to criminals that Sweden takes these offenses seriously. It is a necessary step for ensuring public safety and reducing the knife-edge fear many live with daily.
