I am a current victim of domestic abuse, and my children and I have suffered greatly due to negligence. Our voices are often unheard, our evidence overlooked. In the United States alone, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner - that equates to more than 10 million women and men in a year (National Coalition Against Domestic Violence). Moreover, children who witness such violence are twice as likely to abuse their own partners and children in the future (Childhood Witnessing of Adult Domestic Violence).

We need stricter laws against abusers, including their family members who enable or ignore such behavior. We also need better support systems for survivors - both adults and children - that go beyond temporary shelters or restraining orders.
