Strengthen forest conservation and management in Kenya

The Issue

As a young advocate for positive change, I am deeply invested in the future of our planet, particularly in the field of environmental conservation. Attending university provides me with the opportunity to collaborate with fellow students to address the pressing issue of climate change. Unfortunately, the current approaches are often limited by status quo perspectives and outdated notions. This petition, therefore, seeks innovative solutions for enhancing forest conservation in Kenya.

Our primary goal is to integrate the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) in forest conservation efforts. By pooling resources and expertise, these organizations can maximize their impact and efficiency in protecting our invaluable forests. Comprehensive collaboration will enable the enforcement of existing laws and policies, while also introducing more effective management strategies.

Additionally, it's crucial to incentivize private landowners to contribute to forest conservation. We propose a mandate for private landowners with land more than 5ha  to allocate at least 15% of their land towards forest preservation. This policy will expand green spaces, promote biodiversity, and combat deforestation, which benefits both local communities and the environment at large.

Establishing a Forest Incentive Fund (FIF) will provide financial encouragement for reafforestation and conservation initiatives. This fund can channel resources into projects aimed at restoring degraded lands, supporting community-led conservation projects, and rewarding innovative solutions to environmental challenges.

Moreover, incentives and subsidies should be offered to individuals and businesses willing to go above and beyond existing legal requirements in embracing climate control measures. By financially supporting those eager to exceed environmental targets, we can foster a culture of sustainability and pride in conservation efforts.

We urge the Kenyan government, environmental stakeholders, and the international community to act swiftly in implementing these measures. By signing this petition, you join us in our commitment to creating a greener future for Kenya, making our world a more serene place to live.
